Welcome to Camp Thunderbird!

We invite young athletes to join our returning team at Camp Thunderbird. This weekend is a great opportunity to explore more closely what it is like to be a part of our team! Rowing is a commitment, Charlotte Youth Rowing is a nationally ranked rowing team. We row hard, and have lots of fun. Our team is a 2-3 season sport, we visit many regattas throughout Spring & Fall seasons, with dedicated indoor Winter training. 

Who Can Attend:

Athletes 9th-12th graders can attend for the overnight stay at Camp Thunderbird. 


7th & 8th graders that have attended one of our Learn to Row summer camps over the summer can attend as day campers. 


High school athletes who were unable to attend a summer camp are welcome to try rowing this weekend. 

Tentative Schedule:

Saturday August 23rd


  • Existing CYR athletes meet at CYC 9:00am- team rows boats to Camp Thunderbird 
  • 10:45 am CYR athletes start arriving at camp by boat
  • 11:00 am New athletes arrive to by car to Camp Thunderbird- bag drop at cabin & check-in
  • 11:30-12:00 pm Head Coach Meeting with New Parents (Camp Thunderbird store is open for kids to shop!)
  • 12:30pm SWIM TEST- remember your bathing suit!
  • 1:30 -2:30 pm Info Stations: Safety Video, Water Launch & Recovery, Moving Boats, Oar Handling, & ERG  Demo & Technique 
  • 2:30-3:00 pm Snack Break, provided by CYR
  • 3:00- 4:30 pm FIRST ROW- Combined boats of Novices & Varsity (land based activity if not on the water) 
  • 5:00-6:30 pm SECOND ROW- Combined boats of Novices & Varsity (land based activity if not on the water)
  • 6:30 pm Dinner in dining hall
  • 7:30 pm Activities
  • 9:30 pm Back to cabins
  • 10:00 pm Quite hours begin


Sunday August 25th


  • 6:45 am Wake up
  • 7:00 am MORNING ROW
  • 9:45 am Breakfast
  • 10:00 am Camp wrap-up
  • 10:15 am New athletes pick up at Camp Thunderbird
  • 10:30 am Existing CYR athletes row boats back to CYC

If you are taking the SAT you can still attend please email  headcoach@charlotteyouthrowing.org by August 18th.

Registration is Now Open!

Cost is $125 for new athletes. This includes food, coaching, YMCA costs, and  lodging. 


Note: There is a Camp Thunder Waiver Form located at the bottom of this page, please complete this form and bring a copy with you to camp.

What to Pack for Overnight Campers

  • Athletic wear (t-shirt and shorts), please bring 2-3 changes of clothes
  • High-vis shirt to wear while on the water 
  • Extra pair of comfy clothes for the evening
  • Toiletry  bag, don't forget your tooth brush!
  • Sleeping bag or blanket with twin sheet and a pillow. No bedding is provided
  • Footwear that can get wet, flipflops not acceptable 
  • Extra socks
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat/Visor
